With the opening of the first Leica Gallery in Wetzlar 50 years ago, the company laid the foundation for its cultural commitment. This successful concept continues to thrive today, with 27 galleries around the world.
In collaboration with Leica gallery directors and curators worldwide, an exciting and diverse exhibition has been created, bringing together iconic Leica classics and an equally impressive number of new discoveries. From this collection of favourite photographs, the selection for Personal Perspectives was curated.
Just as the programs of the Leica Galleries are diverse, so too is the exhibition presented at the new Leica Gallery Düsseldorf. The selection ranges from contemporary photography to the great Leica classics. Photo-journalistic works are represented alongside fine art photography, encompassing everything from portraiture to reportage and, of course, street photography — a genre more closely associated with Leica than almost any other.
Visitors will have the opportunity to rediscover works by numerous winners of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the Leica Hall of Fame Award, while also encountering emerging photographic talents whose work enters into unexpected dialogues with the legends of photography.
The anniversary exhibition thus brings together history and stories, always presented from a personal perspective and informed by a deep understanding of photography.
The exhibition also offers a compelling illustration of the significance of the Leica Galleries. They see themselves as places of encounter, reflection and exchange between photographers and an international audience. They provide a platform for visual narratives that explore historical, political and social issues, encouraging discussion and dialogue.
For half a century, the Leica Galleries have stood for photographic excellence and diversity. This legacy is brought together in a remarkable selection of 50 outstanding Leica photographs.
